If there is one word which more accurately than any other describes the mood of the times, it is the word "change" - social, political, moral; economic, philosophic, scientific; national, international, global. Any institution which thinks it can treat the future as though it were just an extension of the past or present is doomed to fail. That goes especially for the church. Too large to ignore; too wide-spread to escape; too unpredictable to control, too rapid to easily stay abreast - change is sweeping us with hurricane force into the third millennium. If the church remains aloof from the changes taking place today, it, for all practical purposes, will have pulled the plug. Yet if the church is merely a reflection of the times, it has no message. What is the divine, eternal, universal message which never changes? It must be rediscovered, dusted off and sent with conviction into the heart of this ever-changing world. This is the burden of the church in transition. But sitting unnoticed at the base of most division in the American Restoration movement is a pervasive unwillingness to be a church in transition. Thinking restoration has already been accomplished, we often have preached a church-centered message and thus have become guilty of perpetuating sectarian division in the name of sound doctrine.
